Job Title: Safety Marshall
Location: Kano
General objective
- The Safety Marshal is responsible for supporting the implementation and enforcement of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) rules at the workplace.
- The role ensures safe working conditions, promotes safety awareness, prevents accidents, unsafe practices and assists in responding to incidents and emergencies in line with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- These are achieved through continuous monitoring, inspections, coaching, and enforcement of company safety procedures.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Workplace Safety Monitoring & Compliance:
- Enforce company safety policies, rules, and procedures always.
- Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with HSE standards.
- Conduct routine site safety inspections around the Extrusion processing areas to identify and address unsafe conditions.
- Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ensure Machine guards are installed and effective.
- Emergency stop buttons are functional.
- No unauthorized bypassing of safety devices.
- Maintenance activities follow LOTO requirements
- Stop unsafe acts or conditions and report violations immediately.
- Follow up with implementation of Corrective actions
- Monitor fire fighting equipment
Risk Assessment & Hazard Control:
- Identify workplace hazards and unsafe behaviours.
- Assist in basic risk assessments and job safety analysis evaluation
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions for identified risks.
- Ensure safety signage and barriers are properly displayed and maintained.
PPE Compliance:
- Ensure compliance to PPE usage
- Ensure proper usage and accountability of PPE issued
- Report repeated non-compliance to PPE usage for disciplinary action
Incident Reporting & Investigation:
- Report accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Assist in incident and accident investigations when required.
- Ensure incidents are documented in accordance with procedures.
- Follow up on corrective actions after incidents.
Emergency Response & Preparedness:
- Act as first responder during emergencies (fire, injury, evacuation).
- Assist in emergency drills and evacuation exercises.
- Ensure fire fighting and emergency equipment are accessible and functional.
- Guide employees and visitors during emergency situations.
Training & Safety Awareness:
- Promote safety awareness among workers and visitors.
- Participate in safety inductions, pepe talks and toolbox talks.
- Encourage safe behaviour and a positive safety culture on site.
- Support supervisors in communicating safety messages effectively.
Authority:
- The Safety Marshal has the authority to:
- Stop any unsafe work posing an immediate risk.
- Report safety violations to supervisors.
- Recommend improvements to eliminate hazards.
- Suspend work until hazards are controlled where there is imminent danger
- Recommend disciplinary action for repeated safety breaches
Requirements
- Education Degree – Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Work experience – 2–5 years prior experience on HSE in a manufacturing or food processing industry.
- Experience in extrusion, milling, or warehouse operations is an added advantage.
- Language skills – English.
- Computer skills – MS Word, MS Excel & Outlook
Other required skills:
- Basic occupational health and safety principles
- Use of PPE and safety signages
- Emergency procedures and first aid basics
- Workplace hazard identification
- Use of fire extinguishers.
