Job Summary
- We are seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Environmental Engineer to support the development, implementation, and monitoring of environmental management systems across the organization's operations.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring environmental performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, conducting environmental assessments, managing waste and pollution-control activities, and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and monitor the company's environmental management policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ensure operational activities comply with applicable environmental laws, regulations, permits, and industry standards.
- Conduct routine environmental inspections and identify potential environmental risks and non-compliance issues.
- Monitor air emissions, wastewater, noise, waste generation, and other environmental parameters as applicable.
- Coordinate proper collection, segregation, storage, treatment, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
- Support the implementation of pollution prevention and environmental impact reduction initiatives.
- Conduct environmental risk assessments and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Assist with environmental impact assessments, audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Maintain accurate records of environmental monitoring activities, waste management, permits, incidents, and corrective actions.
- Prepare environmental reports, dashboards, compliance documentation, and other reports required by management or regulatory authorities.
- Liaise with relevant environmental consultants, contractors, laboratories, and regulatory agencies where required.
- Monitor environmental contractors and service providers to ensure compliance with agreed standards.
- Investigate environmental incidents, complaints, spills, emissions, and other environmental concerns and recommend corrective actions.
- Support emergency preparedness and response activities relating to environmental incidents such as chemical spills, leaks, or uncontrolled discharges.
- Conduct environmental awareness training and toolbox talks for employees and contractors.
- Promote waste reduction, recycling, resource efficiency, and sustainable operational practices.
- Support environmental monitoring programs and ensure required samples and measurements are properly collected and documented.
- Review environmental data and identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Participate in internal and external environmental audits and ensure identified corrective actions are closed out.
- Keep up to date with changes in environmental legislation, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Perform any other environmental engineering duties assigned by management.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or HND in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in environmental management, HSE, manufacturing, industrial operations, consulting, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of environmental management principles and pollution-control practices.
- Working knowledge of Nigerian environmental laws, regulations, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with waste management, environmental monitoring, environmental audits, and compliance reporting.
- Knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes is an advantage.
- Relevant environmental, HSE, sustainability, or professional certifications will be an added advantage.
- Good analytical, investigation, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong report-writing and documentation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to conduct field inspections and work in operational environments.
